A new dollars first keypad - Beacon Budget v0.21.0

This update introduces a new dollars-first amount keypad, gives you more control over how amounts are entered, improves transaction categorization, and includes several fixes.

✨ Features

  • A dollars-first amount keypad. Typing 600 now means $600 instead of $6.00. There's a decimal key for entering cents and math keys for calculations, so you can enter a $600 annual bill as 600 / 12 and save it as $50.00.

  • Choose your keypad style. Existing users keep their current keypad. Go to Settings > System > Keypad style to switch between Dollars first (600 = $600) and Cents first (600 = $6.00). New accounts created on or after November 1, 2026, start with Dollars first. Your preference is saved to your account, so it carries over if you reinstall Beacon or switch phones.

  • Better transaction categorization. New transactions now use your bank's current category information, making them less likely to arrive as Unknown. Categories you've assigned manually are never overwritten, and existing categorized transactions stay unchanged.

  • New Savings and Other Investments categories. Transfers to savings now have their own Savings category, and retirement contributions are categorized under Other Investments. Neither is proposed as a fixed expense.

  • A new Shopping folder and reorganized categories. Online Shopping, Superstores, Convenience Stores, Discount Stores, and Department Stores are now grouped under Shopping. Government Fees, Interest Charges, Dividends, and other categories have also been moved into more appropriate folders. Existing transaction categories are unchanged.

  • Smarter category search. Search using familiar terms to find the category you're looking for. For example, "electric car" finds EV Charging, and "warehouse club" finds Superstores.

  • Easier keypad dismissal. Pull down anywhere on the keypad to close it. Both keypad styles now include a grab bar at the top to make the gesture more visible.

⚡ Improvements

  • Funding amounts update immediately. Editing a bucket's target or status now updates its per-payday amount in the Funding row without needing to leave and reopen the bucket.

  • More reliable transaction syncing across budgets. Transactions from a bank whose accounts are split across two budgets are now handled correctly instead of going missing.

Thanks for continuing to provide feedback and helping improve Beacon Budget 🚀
